What happens to who you are when you go through life-changing experiences like loss, grief, burnout, betrayal or health crises? When you enter motherhood, perimenopause or menopause? When, for whatever reason, or even unknown reasons, you go through a period of prolonged stress, overwhelm, fear or uncertainty?

You rethink who you are, why you're here, and what your priorities are. 

 

You might experience a time of feeling lost or disconnected, as if a part of you has gone offline - emotionally, spiritually, mentally or physically. 

 

This is a normal response to profound change. The body, mind, heart and soul need time to rest before you can process what's happened and what it means for you. 

 

You need time to slowly unfold your way through what is often a profound identity shift: "I'm no longer who I was, but I'm not yet who I'm becoming." This is prime fertile soil time. You are the seed in the darkness, but often the darkness can feel scary, lonely and discombobulating - especially if you don't have a supportive container to help you navigate your way through. 

 

Even when you do have support systems and tools in place, it can still be challenging. Sometimes there's no way around change - there is only through. During this 'through' time, it helps to have someone say: it's okay that you feel this way. It's okay to grieve your old self and life. It's okay to cry. It won't be like this forever. 

 

Finally, eventually, you feel ready for a reset. Ready for a re-emergence. Yet even in that readiness, you might feel stuck.  If your 'cocoon' period was particularly long, painful or complex, or the events preceding it were, you'll likely have a major protector within you saying "Umm, emerge out of this safe cocoon? This cosy, comfortable cave? (Even if it's starting to feel more than a little uncomfortable.) Risk being hurt / failing / burnout /grief / loss /etc again? I think not!"
