The Equinoxes

Day and Night are the same length on both sides of the globe during the Autumn/Spring Equinoxes, with a 12 hour day experienced on every place on Earth.

The Spring Equinox is a time to celebrate the magical time of dawn. It ushers in the period where the days will be longer than the nights, and we can look forward to whatever the brighter days bring.

The Autumn Equinox heralds the time when the days start to be shorter than the nights. It is a sacred time to celebrate the dusk, to give thanks for all you have received in the days past, and to prepare for a time of retreating inward for rest.

Spring Equinox

This time celebrates the fertility of the Earth, the dawn of a new day, and the new beginnings that come with a fresh season. In Greek mythology Demeter the Earth Mother is now reunited with her daughter Persephone who has emerged from her annual 6 months in the underworld. Demeter in her happiness and joy starts to bloom once again with new life. Green candles can be lit to represent new growth, and a renewal of our lifeforce. Now is the time to plant seeds that will pave the way for new directions and bring the fruits of the coming season. The days are now bringing more light, and with more light comes more clarity, wisdom, illumination and forward movement into those areas that have until now had to be in a kind of hibernation period. To usher in this time, face the east (at dawn if you can), and hold out your arms to welcome all the new energy that is headed your way.

Autumn Equinox

This is a special time to celebrate the Harvest of Life and give thanks for all that the recent season has brought us. Candles coloured brown, gold and orange can be lit to bless the bountiful abundance you have in your life, and to honour the energy that Autumn brings. The energy is one of gratitude, as we appreciate the work we have done to get us to this point, and enjoy what is before us now. Blue and black candles can also be lit representing this sacred time of preparing to go within, as the light that was summer and long days has now made the turn toward winter and longer nights. It is also an opportune time to give direct thanks to Mother Earth for the physical nourishment and sustenance she has provided. Sit yourself down in a place of nature, and have the soles of your feet and palms of your hands touching the Earth. Close your eyes and send a prayer to this living, breathing planet. Connect with her energy and perhaps ask how can you be of service to her, giving back something for all you have received.
